BMW M5 Touring: Reveal date locked in for hot wagon
BMW has set August 15 as the launch date for the new M5 Touring, with covers set to be lifted off the performance wagon at Pebble Beach.
It’s been nearly 15 years since production of the last M5 wagon – the V10-powered E61 wrapped up – but BMW will shortly launch a third generation of M5 wagons at Monterey Car Week with the G99-generation.
The 2025 M5 Touring will almost certainly be powered by the same 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 and single electric motor found in the M5 sedan.
On its own, the V8 produces 430kW of power and 750Nm of torque, but the addition of an electric motor built into the eight-speed automatic transmission, brings total system outputs to 535kW and 1000Nm.
The PHEV M5 is not just the most powerful ever, it’s also the heaviest, tipping the scales at 2435kg in sedan form. That figure is expected to rise for the wagon, with its extra metal.
With drive sent to all four wheels, BMW claims the M5 sedan can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds – so it’s fair to predict that the M5 Touring will come within a couple tenths of that.
All Australian-delivered examples of the M5 sedan will be fitted with the M Driver’s Package, which raises the M5’s top speed from 250km/h to 305km/h.
Electric-only range is limited to 69km, courtesy of an 18.6kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
European fuel economy figures (WLTP) range between 1.6L/100km and 10.3L/100km for the sedan, depending on whether the drive battery is fully charged.
Standard equipment for Australian-delivered cars includes adaptive suspension, an M carbon fibre exterior package, and 20-/21-inch alloy wheels.
Inside you get a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 18-speaker surround sound system, four-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.
Pricing for the 2025 M5 starts at $259,900 before on-road costs. The Touring will likely command a small premium.
