Volkswagen confirms local timing for three-row electric Kombi

Volkswagen has confirmed the long-wheelbase ID. Buzz seven-seat electric people mover will be launching in Australia in the first half of 2025.

This will follow the local launch of the short-wheelbase ID. Buzz five-seater and ID. Buzz Cargo electric commercial van, which will start arriving in December 2024.

Volkswagen Australia has also confirmed pricing for the short-wheelbase ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo will be announced in the first quarter of 2024.

Volkswagen’s electric Kombi made its local public debut at the Volkswagen Cronulla Surf Masters over the weekend, alongside a wealth of original Type 2 vans.

In the lead-up to this event Volkswagen Australia confirmed it has logged around 500 expressions of interest for the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo.

Currently, all ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo short-wheelbase models are rear-wheel drive and use a 77kWh (net) lithium-ion battery and a single, rear-mounted electric motor with 150kW of power and 310Nm of torque.

Range is up to 425km according to WLTP testing. It can be DC fast-charged at rates up to 170kW and AC charged at rates up to 11kW.

The long-wheelbase seven-seat model has an extra 250mm between the wheels, meaning it measures 4962mm long. It also has a larger 85kWh battery and a more powerful 210kW rear electric motor.

Volkswagen has also previously confirmed a dual-motor all-wheel drive GTX variant is in the works. Volkswagen Australia says it still wants this sporty model though it hasn’t been officially confirmed just yet.

In short-wheelbase form the ID. Buzz GTX has a total system outputs of 220kW, whereas in long-wheelbase form it has a total system output of 250kW.

“There is nothing on the road that melds love-brand heritage with new-age technical sophistication quite like the ID. Buzz,” said Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles director Ryan Davies.

“We anticipate the coolest battery electric vehicle may quickly become the hottest ticket in town for families, retirees, tradies, surfers and the environmentally conscious all told.”
